Where You Can Shop Maui-Local from Afar

In the aftermath of the Lahaina wildfires, Maui's local businesses are floundering and people are struggling to put food on the table, keep the lights on, and stay rooted in Maui soil. Here is how you can support the people of Maui from afar if you aren't able to do so in-person.

There are so many lists of places you can spend your hard-earned dollars to support the people of Maui, but most of them miss one thing—verification. Here, I've compiled a list of different places you can shop with the added step of verifying that these businesses actually have a brick-and-mortar location on Maui. As such, you can rest assured your money is going into Maui's economy and being shared by people who live and work there. Maui is strong, but Maui is not omnipotent. Please consider supporting the businesses of Maui as much as possible, especially going into the holidays.

Where You Can Shop & Know it Benefits Locals

Jewelry

  • Na Hoku specializes in Hawaiian-style jewelry and has a couple of storefronts in Wailea and Kahului. They've been in business in the islands since 1924.

  • Hawaii's Heritage Jewelers creates custom engraved Hawaiian heirloom jewelry including the classic golden name bracelet as well as other pieces. They have a storefront in Makawao and have been in business for many years, with family ties to the former Royal Hawaiian Heritage Jewelry.

  • No Ka 'Oi Jewelers specializes in custom engagement rings and jewelry. They are located in Kahului and are known for their above-and-beyond service.

  • Maui Rooted does hand-made jewelry made of materials from Hawaiian and Pacific cultures. They have a pop-up store at Maui Mall in Kahului on Sun and Mon from 9AM to 5PM.

  • Maui Silver Jewelry like several other brick-and-mortar-only stores had a storefront on Lahaina's historic Front Street and burned down in the fires. They have no jewelry to sell online, but if you want to contribute to help them out directly, you can do so on their website.

Clothing

  • Na Koa is where the locals shop for that unmistakeable surf shorts and tee look. Theyʻre located in Kahului, and theyʻve partnered with Lahaina Restoration Foundation, a non-profit.

Art

  • Maui Fish Printing does traditional and custom Japanese Fish Art. You can buy what is available, or if you fish, you can send a picture to the artist and heʻll make it into a beautiful art piece you can hang on your wall. Located in Makawao.

  • Maui Hands has breadth and depth of artwork to choose from, whether thatʻs paintings, wooden sculptures, or ceramics and more. Theyʻre located in Makawao and Paia.

  • Maui Fine Art has photos of Lahaina as well as blown glass and aluminum prints. Theyʻre located in Kihei.

Flowers

Souvenirs

  • Native Intelligence is known for carefully curated high quality goods and gifts. They have a store in Wailuku.

  • Beach Bumz carries beautifully carved wooden sculptures as well as ceramic goods. They are located in Kihei.

  • Lahaina Outlet Store was known for being an affordable souvenir and clothing shop, but they burned down. Now, they are trying to raise money for their lost business. They used to be located in Lahaina.

  • ABC Stores are a local franchise known for being a one-stop shop for souvenirs, sunscreen, shirts, and some food. They have several locations throughout the islands, including two that burned down in Lahaina, store #61 and store #60.

  • The author of this post has a few books out that you can purchase on Amazon, The Magical Zoo, The Good Guy, and 7 Days in Maui. A fair warning about the last book, it had Lahaina on the itinerary and that has been destroyed so some of it is no longer relevant. That will be updated in the near future. I donʻt have a storefront on Maui because of the online nature of my businesses, but I do have a condo you can rent in Kihei.

Of course, this isnʻt an exhaustive list of physical stores on Maui that also offer online shopping. But itʻs a start. And if you have an online store with a physical address I can confirm, please reach out to me so that I may add you to this list. My hope is it will continue to grow, but more importantly that it will help buoy up the businesses that are struggling in the wake of the Lahaina Fires and the subsequent cancellations of trips to Maui.

Bless you for your consideration and generosity.

Aloha,
