When people come to Kihei, their first thought is: BEACH. But the next thought is: FOOD. And Kihei (and Maui in general) has come a long way foodwise since I was a kid. "Street food" wasn't a thing back then. But these days, there are perhaps hundreds of food trucks throughout the island and many of them are very good. Here's a list of ten great options, from seafood, to mouthwatering burgers, to vegan fare. Click the names for a map to each spot.
1. Papio's Place
Papio's offers a wholly plant-based menu, including top favorites such as Mac n Trees, Street Tacos, and Asada Your Way (a California-style burrito).
2. Sawasdee Maui
Thai fusion food at its best. Try the Red Curry, Coconut Shrimp, or Lobster Fried Rice.
3. Bling Bing Shave Ice Maui
Killer shave ice with all kinds of add-ons. Super customizable. Very sweet. Try their ube with condensed milk for a unique island flavor. Lychee is a tops too.
4. Happy Belly
From chicken katsu (a must-try at some point on your trip), to pork belly with rice, to slider and bao, this fusion place has a lot to offer, and all of it tasty.
5. Burger Boys Hawaii
For a wagyu burger, look no further. Get ready to drop $30 for one, though.
6. Aloha Prime Eatery
For a hearty, plate lunch, peep Aloha Prime Eatery. They have potato crusted mahi, prime rib, and more.
7. Wing Kings Maui
For those low-carb peeps, here's a meaty treat. Wing Kings has a variety of flavors and including pineapple teriyaki, scorpion, house buffalo for a personal touch on the classic.
8. Oao Sushi Go
This list wouldn't be complete without a poke (raw fish...think sushi, without the roll) option. Oao is a popular, ready-to-go poke bowl. Of course, if you love poke, you can buy it by the pound at most grocery stores, too.
9. Kinaole Grill Food Truck
Kinaole has many mouthwatering dishes. From their flavorful garlic shrimp to their savory kalbi ribs, this food truck is a paradise for meat lovers. Be sure to try their famous garlic noodles too!
10. Sol Brothers Southern BBQ
Sometimes, you just need a brisket sandwich on the beach. Sol Brothers has got you covered. Also, try their mac n cheese, jerk ribs sandwich, and rice and beans.
This list isn't comprehensive by any means and there are certainly many more delicious restaurants in Kihei. Check those out here. But if you are feeling the sit-outside food truck vibe, you won't be disappointed with these options at all. Just make sure you can still fit in your swimsuit after.
